About Adela

"I started writing when my mom got sick with Multiple Sclerosis. Now we stay with my aunt in Queens and she lets me work at her business, Happy Endings Day Spa. It's not such a happy place, though. The other bummer is that my dad got deported when I was six, so I haven't seen him since.  The poetry workshop has really helped me. I've met some really cool girls there and they make me feel like my poems are great. We have a lot of fun together. This poem is from the first day, when we interviewed each other and then wrote a poem from our answers. Hope you like it!"
Adela, Gone Wild

Sixteen
roaming Flushing
I paint nails   massage feet
I like dark chocolate and Mink
my cat and old movies like Doctor Zhivago.
I have thick eyelashes. My clothes are vintage
1970s.  I do sit ups for fun   for the day I can swim
at Miami Beach   go clubbing   hip hop all
night.  I write to my Dad once a week
in my head.  I dance down waterfalls. I hum
to myself when I get the creeps. I lie
about my silver birthday since Scorpios
        aren’t popular especially
          atheist ones. I’m between
      guys   very picky
        about life
   because
    life has
      rarely
     picked
me.
